Nov. 23, 2012; Tucson, AZ, USA: Arizona Wildcats running back Ka

The nation’s leading returning rusher, Arizona Wildcats running back Ka’Deem Carey, has had just a bit of a tumultuous offseason. He faced misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct charges back in December stemming from an incident with his girlfriend–charges which were eventually dropped–and back in January he was kicked out of an Arizona baseball game against UCLA following an altercation with a security officer.

Earlier this week, head coach Rich Rodriguez hinted that there may be some punishment in the form of limited playing time headed his star’s way.

He apparently followed through with that.

Arizona announced tonight that Carey will not take the field whatsoever for the Wildcats when they open their season against NAU.

While I’m not sure the loss of Carey should make that much of a difference for this talented squad–who is expected to make a run at a conference championship–it does speak volumes about Rodriguez and his discipline tactics. Although some will point to the lack of validity of their opponent, he could have taken the easy way out and suspended him for just a quarter or half. Instead, he’s making his prize piece sit this entire one out.
