With its offense again sputtering, TCU head coach Gary Patterson is reportedly looking to shake things up for the Horned Frogs. Per Stefan Stevenson of The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reserve quarterback Tyler Matthews may take over the offense against rival SMU.
TCU lost Week 1 starter Casey Pachall early against Southeastern Louisiana, leaving the offense in the hands of 2012 starter Trevone Boykin. Boykin came into Saturday’s game with 397 yards on 38-of-61 passing with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Boykin was 9-of-19 passing at time of publish for 86 yards, and rushed for just 11 yards on eight carries at time of original publish.
The Frogs have 17 points in six combined quarters against Texas Tech, and through the first half vs. SMU. Matthews, a redshirt freshman from Wichita, Kan., saw very limited action against SELA. He has yet to complete a collegiate pass.
Matthews was a 4-star prospect in the 2012 recruiting class, and a Pro Set signal caller more in the vein of Pachall.
After the Frogs failed to convert a possession deep in SMU territory into a touchdown, Matthews came in during the third quarter on alternating snaps with Boykin. After Matthews ran one play, Boykin returned to throw his first score of the day.
