Already down big-play wide receiver Shaq Roland, South Carolina lost quarterback Connor Shaw on the Gamecocks’ first possession against UCF. Shaw was tackled on a scramble, injuring his right shoulder and fumbling. He was taken off the field for further examination. Initial reports from Orlando have no timetable for a return.
Gamecock reserve Dylan Thompson shared snaps with Shaw for much of 2012, and has been an integral part of South Carolina’s preparation through the early phases of 2013. He entered with South Carolina trailing the upset-minded Knights, 7-0.
The ABC broadcast reported Shaw will not return, suffering from South Carolina trainers deemed a shoulder strain.
