Kendal Thompson’s career never really got started at Oklahoma, and now the son of former Sooner quarterback Charles Thompson is going to try his luck elsewhere – Utah to be precise.
Thompson was a high school all-American, and one of the top rated quarterbacks in the nation when he signed with Oklahoma back in 2011. After redshirting his first season, he sat out his year behind senior Landry Jones, biding his time and preparing to push for the starting job in 2013.
It wasn’t to be, as Thompson broke his foot in fall camp. Thompson had to sit and watch as first Blake Bell, and then Trevor Knight, passed him by on the depth chart. Thompson did get to play in 2 games, but completed just 4 of 13 passes for 64 yards, with 1 TD and 1 interceptions.
Thompson won’t be walking into a starting job in Salt Lake City either, as Utes quarterback Travis Wilson was recently cleared to play after a potentially career-threatening head injury. Wilson isn’t the prettiest of passers, but he’s a gamer who had led the Utes to a 4-2 record before said head injury affected his play and ultimately ended his season.
With backup Adam Schulz also in the mix, Utah’s training camp should be a spirited affair.
