When David Cutcliffe said that the ACC could explode at last month’s media days, you might have thought he was talking about Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Miami, and Virginia Tech. What would have been forgotten, though, is Larry Fedora’s North Carolina Tar Heels.

More from College Football News

It may have seemed like the Tar Heels took a step back last season, following Fedora’s inaugural 8-5 season with a 7-6 season, but with a more skilled quarterback, a more experienced running back, proven receivers, and a loaded defense, this year’s team has a ton of potential. And a difficult schedule.

On top of the schedule, the football team is once again under academic investigation, which is the last thing it needs hanging over its head. So how do the Tar Heels take the next step?

Having a dual threat quarterback who is back after starting most of last year is a very good start. Then there’s a top 50 scoring defense that returns eight starters. A Top 25 recruiting class only adds to the roster.

And finally, closing out games. The Tar Heels could have been a 10-win team last year if the ball just bounced their way in a few games. This year, they should be more experienced and talented enough to take those close games.
