Sarafin, a senior lineman for the Sun Devils, made the announcement to Tempe-based LGBT Publication Compete Magazine, according to news reports you can see here.
Sarafin does have similarities to former Missouri defensive lineman Michael Sam in the sense that they came out to their teammates first and have received the support of their schools’ athletic programs. However, Sarafin will be the first openly gay player to step onto the football field this Fall as an FBS player if he sees any action due to the fact that Sam came out after he left Missouri.

Sarafin has also received support from Sam. His decision to come out could possibly be a result of Sam, who deserves even more credit for what he did.
By publicizing the fact that he is gay before the NFL Draft, it was only a matter of time before more players began coming out. It’s always the hardest for the first domino to fall, and it gets a little bit easier each time to knock the next one down.

However, Sarafin’s announcement won’t make as much news. Let’s be honest, he’s a guy who doesn’t play much and likely won’t see the field that often this year. It’s a good story for college football, but what’s really needed is for a college football star to come out while he’s still playing. That hasn’t happened yet.
But Sarafin brings the sport one step closer to that.
