Big Ten East

4. Penn State Nittany Lions

As they break in a new coach and are loaded with young talent, the Penn State Nittany Lions have a bright future with a team that shouldn’t be great this year. In fact, it should be at No. 5 in the division, not No. 4.

  • The only reason Penn State is above Maryland is their schedule. Northwestern at home and Illinois on the road are two perfect draws from the West. Then, they get Ohio State and Michigan State at home, so one of those could be an upset. Add to that the fact that Maryland has to go to Pennsylvania, and they have 5 almost sure Big Ten wins when you throw Indiana and Rutgers into the mix.

Also, you can’t short-sell them. The Nittany Lions may be young, but there’s lots of talent still, starting with sophomore quarterback Christian Hackenberg, and James Franklin has proven he can win with the bare minimum.

A weak non-conference schedule almost assures this is a 9-win team.
