Conference Power Rankings: Big Ten Better than Expected in Week 1
1. SEC
No surprise here. The SEC remains the toughest conference in college football and lived up to its billing over the weekend, with the obvious exception of Vanderbilt. LSU knocked off the likely Big Ten West champion in Wisconsin, Georgia throttled one of the top ACC teams in Clemson, and Texas A&M showed it is not going to fall of just because Johnny Manziel is gone. Sure, Alabama struggled with West Virginia, but the Tide have obvious troubles defending the spread offense and still managed to pull out the victory with that and a new quarterback in the game.

The top heavy part of the conference wasn’t the only dominant part of the weekend. Middle of the pack teams beat up on very good mid-majors, including Ole Miss’s blowout against Boise State. And Tennessee, who is fighting to get 6 wins this year, completely dominated everybody’s favorite mid-major this offseason in Utah State.
Perhaps the scariest part of this conference is simply how loaded one side of it is. Georgia looks like the runaway favorite in the East, but the SEC West has a legitimate four teams that are thinking about the college football playoff: Alabama, Auburn, LSU, and Texas A&M. Throw in the fact that both of the Mississippi schools are hoping to compete for the SEC West crown this year, and this conference could be the toughest it’s ever been.
