The Tennessee Vols made sure to crush the hopes of any mid-major upset hype very early against Utah State en route to a 38-7 victory. Playing freshmen all over the field and relying on veteran leadership at quarterback, the Vols may have a better mix of raw talent and experience than we thought. True, there aren’t that many experienced players on the roster, but by all accounts those with experience have taken great leadership roles. Couple that in with the depth at the skill position and the possible improvement, yes, improvement on the defensive line, and this is a very good team. It gets another good test this week with another good mid-major coming to town.
The Arkansas State Red Wolves are coming off three straight seasons with 8 wins or more and opened this season with a 37-10 victory over Montana State in which quarterback Fredi Knighten had 219 yards passing along with a touchdown and 104 yards rushing. The junior is in his first year as the full-time starter, and he is going against what is still an inconsistent front seven, so there is a chance he could do some damage this week.
Prediction
Knighten will make a nice play or two throughout the course of the game for a couple of scores, but it will be relatively meaningless. This game will be very similar to last week’s game for Tennessee, and they’ll come out with a pretty easy win. The Vols will never be threatened except for maybe in the first half of the first quarter.
