The Mississippi State Bulldogs had a strong showing in their first game, albeit against Southern Miss, with Dak Prescott throwing for 4 touchdowns and 284 yards to go along with 23 yards rushing. The dark-horse Heisman candidate is off to a great start and has a chance to add to that this week against what should be a sub-par UAB Blazers team. Also, the Bulldogs stifling defense reared its head last year, shutting out Southern Miss 49-0. Mississippi State has two more weeks to correct any mistakes it might have made before the gauntlet begins with a trip to LSU scheduled on Sept. 20.
UAB, meanwhile, may be looking at making a comeback after joining the rest of the Conference USA with a nice non-conference win on Saturday. Beating Troy 48-10 is a big deal for a program trying to return to prominence. Now, with a game against Mississippi State, the Blazers have a chance to really make a strong statement about where their program is. But it’ll be tough.
Prediction
Mississippi State will control this game from start to finish the same way it controlled the Southern Miss game, despite playing a better team. UAB may be improved, but it will never seriously threaten in this game.
