HusSCARE: Nebraska Barely Escapes vs. McNeese State

Nebraska might need to go back to the option offense. Inconsistent passing from Tommie Armstrong, Jr. almost led to a major upset loss to McNeese State.

Did you think Bo Pelini was under scrutiny before? It’s worse now.

Armstrong was a very pedestrian 16 of 31 for 242 yards and an interception against a team that is bad even by FCS standards. This is the same team that gashed Florida Atlantic on the ground last week, and it decided to continuously go to the air to put away McNeese State.

Armstrong, meanwhile, continued to come up small.

Then, finally, with less than a minute left and the game tied at 24, Armstrong hit Ameer Abdullah who took it 58 yards to the house. And that was all Abdullah.

Without that play, Armstrong’s numbers were absolutely pathetic.

But to give him a break, how could a Pelini-coached defense allow 24 points to such a bad FCS school? Honestly, this was pathetic, and Pelini has a lot to work on.

But he might want to change the offensive style. Armstrong did have 11 carries for 131 yards, continuing to show his mobility, and Nebraska has a very strong running game when it’s utilized right. Dare I say the triple option should be brought back the helped the Cornhuskers achieve dominant success for decades? They might have the personnel to run it this year, and Armstrong clearly has accuracy issues.

Why not go for it? It would throw the rest of the Big Ten off. You could implement more of a passing game in it with some really good receivers, but let Armstrong use his dual-threat abilities even more than he does, and get the running backs more involved as well.

You need to do something to shake this team up. Perhaps that’s the key.

But the Cornhuskers will still have to figure out something on defense as well.

At least a win is a win, but they didn’t make the Big Ten look good in the process.
