Saturday Blitz Big 12 Power Rankings Week 2

9. Kansas Jayhawks, 1-0 (0-0), Defeated Southeast Missouri State 34-28

The Jayhawks were very close to taking that bottom spot in our Big 12 power rankings after barely beating Missouri State, but simply put 1-0 is better than 0-2, no matter how you slice it. And there are lots of other reasons as to why Kansas, for right now at least, belongs above Iowa State.

The Jayhawks shouldn’t be punished to harshly for having a scare against Southeast Missouri State because they had a 34-7 lead in the fourth quarter and simply took their foot off the pedal on offense while giving up a couple of big plays on defense to let the Redhawks back in the game.

Also, the fact that Iowa State lost to an FCS school supersedes the fact that the Jayhawks struggled with an FCS school. This isn’t the most confident pick we’ve made, and by the end of the year it’s very possible that the teams switch spots, but for now, Kansas doesn’t deserve the bottom spot simply for having one bad quarter its opening game.

But Charlie Weis’s seat just got even hotter, and he had better shore up his depth if he is to keep his job.
