Saturday Blitz Big 12 Power Rankings Week 2

3. West Virginia Mountaineers 1-1 (0-0), Defeated Towson 54-0 Last Week

The Mountaineers could be very surprising to everybody as the season goes on if they keep up what they have been doing two games in. They played Alabama better than anybody expected them to, and to make sure the game wasn’t a fluke, they blew out Towson.

So it was just Towson, but 54-0 is 54-0. That’s an offensive clinic with a defensive shutout, and it makes for the second time both units looked good. West Virginia’s defense forced a very loaded Alabama offense to play inconsistently and then pitched a shutout, so perhaps it’s the real deal.

The offense, meanwhile, gave Alabama fits throughout the day, and on Saturday, quarterback Clint Trickett was an incredible 35 of 40 for 348 yards and 2 touchdowns with no interceptions. He added another rushing touchdown, and could be exactly what this team needs to get back to winning.

Perhaps West Virginia is finally ready to prove it belongs in the same class with other Power Five teams.
