Saturday Blitz Vegas Big 12 Predictions Week 3

Tennessee Volunteers at No. 4 Oklahoma Sooners

Line: Oklahoma By 21

It’s a shame this game wasn’t played 10 years ago, when both programs were doing very well. Now, as Tennessee appears to be on the verge of returning to a Top 10 program, Oklahoma is already there. Or is it? Two dominant wins over Tulsa and Louisiana Tech would suggest so, but the Sooners still have some issues on defense and in the passing game that could be exploited. Giving up 16 points to Louisiana Tech is not a great thing, and let’s be honest. Trevor Knight has not done anything that impressive so far this year. Both will have to play much better if they get seriously tested by Tennessee.

This Tennessee Vols team is loaded with young talent everywhere in Butch Jones’s second year and has already turned to lots of freshmen to get to 2-0. One piece of good news for the Vols is that they have contained two mobile quarterbacks for very good teams mid-major conferences so far, showing that they may be prepared for Knight. The front four looks better than last year, and it will need to get pressure on Knight while the cornerbacks make big plays and the linebackers stay in position to give the Vols a chance to win. Then, Tennessee’s deep receiving corps. will have to come through with some great plays if they are to steal a win in Norman.

Prediction

This is going to be a much closer game than people think because, despite being young, Tennessee has the horses to go head-to-head with Oklahoma for a game. The Vols don’t have the same depth or experience yet, but there is talent, and it’s enough to pull of the upset if Oklahoma gets caught napping. The Vols won’t get the upset, but they’ll cover the spread and force the college football world to take notice.
