Saturday Blitz Vegas Big Ten Predictions Week 3

East Carolina Pirates at No. 17 Virginia Tech Hokies

Line: Virginia Tech by 10

The Virginia Tech Hokies are riding high right now, using old-fashioned Beamer-Ball to pull off a great upset at Ohio State last Saturday. At 2-0, they have found different ways to win both games, playing for and making breaks, then taking advantage of them. With East Carolina coming to town, the Hokies are going to need a little bit more consistency from Michael Brewer at quarterback if they’re going to continue winning. Honestly, it’s hard to see how they won the last game so convincingly with both teams committing the same amount of turnovers and having nearly identical offenses as far as the stat sheet goes. Beamer is going to want to work on taking care of the football against the Pirates and needs the defense to step up.

The Pirates, meanwhile, are coming off a 10-point loss to a good South Carolina team and have a very good offense led by quarterback Shane Carden that can put up points. As long as drives don’t stall the way did against the Gamecocks, they are more than capable of pulling off the upset here. They’ll want to make sure the offense comes through and then create a few turnovers on defense, as the Hokies have already shown that they are more than capable of giving the ball away more than they should. If those two things happen, this could turn into an upset.

Prediction

This Virginia Tech team is special. Frank Beamer’s squad will win and win ugly as they did last week, but it will look more convincing this time around. Brewer will make a couple of mistakes and make up for it with some great plays for the Hokies offense to put up points, and they’ll also force a few turnovers to set up more points for the win.
