Blitz Points: College Football Top Performers From Week 3
5. Steve Spurrier, Head Coach, South Carolina Gamecocks Head Coach (Defeated Georgia Bulldogs 38-35)
Spurrier belongs on this list as a head coach. Once again, he out-coached somebody else to victory thanks to his offensive genius. But that’s not news for somebody who is on the Mount Rushmore of SEC coaches. What is news, however, is how he was able to do that given everything that has happened.
Part of a coach’s job is to psychologically have players ready to play. That had to be a hard job given the Gamecocks terrible opening game blowout loss to Texas A&M. Normally that wouldn’t be a problem for Georgia, but with South Carolina, it had to be hard to get back up after such a letdown. Winning against East Carolina may have helped a little bit, but Spurrier still had to do an incredible job getting the Gamecocks properly ready for this game.
And he did.
It is because of Spurrier that they played their hearts out, even on defense despite giving up 35 points. Don’t forget this is a Georgia team that has a very good quarterback and a Heisman caliber running back, and the Gamecocks are still adjusting to the 3-4 scheme. They looked much better in it Saturday than they did two weeks ago.
