San Diego State Aztecs at Oregon State Beavers
Line: Oregon State by 10
Coming off a bye week, the Oregon State Beavers and their high-powered passing attack with quarterback Sean Mannion now host a San Diego State defense that has looked pretty darn good through two games. The Beavers, fortunately, have found balance in their offense with a strong running game now behind the legs of Terron Ward and Storm Woods, who have combined for more than 320 yards on the ground so far this year while Mannion has averaged more than 300 yards a game passing. Both sides will have to show up to make sure the Aztecs don’t pull off an upset thanks to their tough defense. Also, the Beavers’ defense has to show up better than it did against Hawaii two weeks ago.
The Aztecs, meanwhile, have relied on a balanced offense and good defense to get to 1-1 and almost beat North Carolina. This biggest thing for them will be to find a way to take care of the football with their aggressive style of play. Otherwise, this will be a blowout. The defense is good enough to get stops, but it will have to step it up another level against this Oregon State offense that can score any way it is dared to. Donnel Pumphrey will need to be used in the running game a lot along with Chase Price so the Aztecs can mount long drives and give their defense a chance. Both can play, and if Quinn Kaehler, who’s been decent this year, finds some type of rhythm, then this game could get interesting.
Prediction
San Diego State will play Oregon State the way they did North Carolina for a while, but the Beavers have too good of an offense for it to last. For three quarters, this will be a regular back and forth close game that is a little more defensive, but the Oregon State offense will turn it on in the fourth for the win.
