It wasn’t quite on the level of Melvin Gordon’s performance, but it was extremely close from a statistics perspective. And Samaje Perine did it in a huge Big 12 game against a West Virginia team that is much better than anybody thought they would be at the beginning of the year. Without much support from Trevor Knight in the passing game and West Virginia constantly threatening behind the arm of Clint Trickett, Perine saved the game for Oklahoma. Make no mistake, they don’t win that game without his explosive play.
Remember that West Virginia was up 17-10 before Perine tied the game with a touchdown, and in the second half Oklahoma and Bob Stoops turned almost exclusively to him to lead them to victory. Perine scored every touchdown for the Sooners in the second half en route to the 45-33 Oklahoma victory. He deserves all the credit you can give him for shouldering that burden and protecting Oklahoma’s undefeated record and Top 5 ranking.
