Saturday Blitz Conference Power Rankings Week 4
7. Mountain West Conference
The Mountain West Conference scored a few nice wins over the weekend to remain in the top half of non-Power Five conferences. Wyoming really showed the program they’re building under Craig Bohl after beating Florida Atlantic 20-19, New Mexico pulled out a victory over rival New Mexico State, Boise State had a dominant win over Louisiana Lafayette, and Fresno State finally got a win as it dominated Southern Utah. Not to mention that Hawaii played Colorado as tough as they could going against a Power Five school.
Still, there were some bad losses by the MWC that keep it from being higher on this list. UNLV flat out got embarrassed by Houston, which could have been closer. Utah State is the trendy Mountain West power house and lost to Arkansas State out of the Sun Belt, which is a terrible look. And San Diego State and San Jose State could have at least put up halfway decent fights against Oregon State and Minnesota respectively.
The conference as a whole is right where it was expected to be at the beginning of the year, but that is unfortunate to a degree because early on it looked like a conference that could compete with some of the upper-echelon Power Five conferences. Utah State’s losses have squashed that fantasy to a degree.
