Saturday Blitz SEC Power Rankings Week 4

7. South Carolina Gamecocks, 3-1 (2-1), Defeated Vanderbilt Commodores 48-34 Last Saturday

The Gamecocks may have struggled for a half against Vanderbilt last Saturday, but to quote Stephen A. Smith, it’s a “mere bag of shells.” This is still a defense trying to find some consistency after switching to a 3-4 scheme, so a few bumps in the road have to be expected. That doesn’t mean we should write this team off completely. With the win over Georgia, South Carolina and Steve Spurrier actually are in complete control of their own destiny to accomplish everything they want to accomplish on the season.

The offense, finally, is finding its rhythm as well after two great weeks under Dylan Thompson. Also, it turns out this team played by far the hardest schedule to open the season because its first three games were against teams who are now in the Top 25, and the Gamecocks won two of them. They have clearly regrouped after that awful opening loss to Texas A&M, and things are looking pretty good right now. A home game against Missouri should be a victory this weekend and allow South Carolina to move to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference. But they can’t take this game for granted.
