Saturday Blitz Vegas SEC Predictions Week 5

Memphis Tigers at No. 10 Ole Miss Rebels

Line: Ole Miss by 21

The Rebels have looked like one of the most complete teams in the SEC en route to their 3-0 record, but after the Mississippi State win at LSU last week, they need to start proving that they’re still the top dogs in the state of Mississippi. This weekend the SEC team of the Delta receives a visit from the college of the major Delta city as the University of Memphis comes to town. And the Rebels can’t take this team lightly. The defense has looked great through three games this year, and it will have to show up again on Saturday against a very good Memphis offense. Bo Wallace also has to avoid making the turnovers he made in his first game against a good mid-major team. Those two factors are key for the Rebels to avoid an upset.

The Tigers, meanwhile, have lots of momentum in Justin Fuente’s third season. The defense has played well, but it’s the offense that’s made lots of noise through three games en route to a 2-1 record. For Memphis, the biggest key is forcing Ole Miss to make mistakes on offense the way it did against UCLA two weeks ago when it almost pulled off the upset. The Tigers also need Paxton Lynch to come through against a stout Ole Miss defense, and Fuente needs to use balance to help his team pull off what would be a major upset. Finally, they have to take care of the football to have a chance.

Prediction

Ole Miss is too talented to lose this game, and they’ll control the game for the most part, but the Tigers will gain more respect by hanging tough this weekend. Wallace will make a couple of mistakes to keep the game close, and Memphis’s offense will come through a few times as well. It just won’t be enough for the win.
