Saturday Blitz SEC Power Rankings Week 5

6. LSU Tigers, 4-1 (0-1), Defeated New Mexico State Aggies 63-7 Last Saturday

The LSU Tigers did a nice job recovering from such a bad loss to Mississippi State last weekend by blowing out New Mexico State. This team also still has a great win on the resume after beating Wisconsin in the opener, and the SEC West is likely to beat each other up, so it still could make a run. Having a loss is the only thing keeping them from being higher on the list.

The quarterback play looks like it could be in good shape too, now, with Brandon Harris starting in place of Anthony Jennings. Sure, it was only against the Aggies, but Harris looked great in his first start as he threw for 178 yards and 3 touchdowns, going 11 for 14. Leonard Fournette was finally able to take off as well, living up to the hype on Saturday after 18 carries for 122 yards and 2 touchdowns. Perhaps the quarterback change was all the Tigers needed to get back on track.

Still, the loss at home to Mississippi State can’t be ignored. The defense got exposed a bit in that game, so we can’t put it all on the lack of quarterback play. For the Tigers to move up the list, the front seven has to improve on defense and reach the level of the secondary, which can make plays but can’t do everything.
