Saturday Blitz SEC Power Rankings Week 5

1. Alabama Crimson Tide, 4-0 (1-0), Idle Last Saturday

Like Mississippi State, Alabama had a bye last Saturday. Like Mississippi State, Alabama didn’t do anything to lose its spot in the Top 2. Like Mississippi State, Alabama looked dominant in its last win. Unlike Mississippi State, nobody should be surprised by Alabama being where it is.

The Tide look even scarier with an offense, and Blake Sims has played his way into the Heisman race. Whether or not that lasts is up for debate, but if Sims and the offense play this well all year with Lane Kiffin calling the shots, the rest of the college football world is in trouble. We know the defense will be fine. West Virginia is still very good win, even if the Mountaineers are only 2-2. That win they had over Maryland now looks great, and Alabama can be forgiven for struggling with them.

Florida is not a great win, but the way Alabama beat them is. The Tide simply demolished the Gators and only kept them in the game thanks to a few untimely mistakes. As crazy as it sounds, once things get clicking Alabama could be better than it was the past two years.

The team has a great chance to get its first major victory of the season this Saturday with a visit to Ole Miss, and it’s crucial to understand that the Rebels will be going for the win, not the upset. They can’t be the secondary Mississippi school. Alabama had better come ready to play and prove they still deserve this spot.
