Saturday Blitz SEC Power Rankings Week 5

13. Kentucky Wildcats, 3-1 (1-1), Defeated Vanderbilt Commodores 17-7 Last Saturday

Hey Kentucky fans, want a cookie? Why is there all this encouragement about playing Florida close and then beating Vanderbilt? Florida is not good this year, and Vanderbilt is the worst team in the conference. That’s not enough to put the Bluegrass Boys anywhere significant in the conference.

Okay, that’s a little unfair because this is a decent team. The only reason they’re next to last is because the conference is so incredibly deep. This is a 7 or 8-win team in any other conference in the country easily, but in the SEC, it has to join four or five other teams desperately fighting for a bowl game. When it comes to tiers in the conference, Vanderbilt is by itself at the bottom. The Wildcats, meanwhile, are with a bunch of other teams not in the bottom and not in contention for any championship but fighting for a winning season.

Kentucky has proven that it’s got a really good defense and looks great in Mark Stoops’s second season, but there are still too many questions about a very suspect offense. That could be the team’s downfall as the season drags on.
