Saturday Blitz SEC Power Rankings Week 5

10. South Carolina Gamecocks, 3-2 (2-2), Lost to Missouri 21-20 Last Saturday

Staying true to what he always does, Steve Spurrier wasn’t lying when he said after Vanderbilt that the Gamecocks had fooled many of the pollsters. That rang true Saturday after a home loss to a Missouri team that just lost to one of the bottom Big Ten teams, Indiana.

Dylan Thompson simply looks inaccurate. It didn’t seem like a big deal in the offseason because of Thompson’s experience, but Connor Shaw is clearly a huge loss for this team. The real question this raises is what does this say about the SEC East? Georgia is supposed to be the best team in the division, but the Dawgs lost to South Carolina, who lost to Missouri, who lost to Indiana. Does that make the East up for grabs?

It sure puts South Carolina in a tough situation. The Gamecocks were supposed to compete for the SEC championship this year, but the defense is inconsistent with the 3-4 switch, and the offense manages to play bad when the defense plays well. There’s talent on this team, but it is very inconsistent altogether. Otherwise, it would be much higher on this list.
