Saturday Blitz SEC Power Rankings Week 5

7. Georgia Bulldogs, 3-1 (1-1), Defeated Tennessee Volunteers 35-32 Last Saturday

This ranking may be questionable to lots of SEC fans since Georgia’s loss to South Carolina looks a lot worse now, and it’s not like barely beating Tennessee is something to brag about. But the Dawgs still have the best player in college football in Todd Gurley, and it looks like that’ll be enough for them to squeak out lots of close wins.

They also have a quality win on the schedule in Clemson, and that was a blowout win to the point that we can’t ignore how good this team can be. If Hutson Mason can manage to start throwing the ball better, then we might have a dominant team on our hands. For right now, Gurley’s raw talent is enough to keep them in the top half of the conference, even if it is only at No. 7. We’ll be able to find out a lot more about this team as the season goes on, but not as much as other SEC teams since the Dawgs may have managed to have the easiest schedule of anybody in the conference.

Still, they clearly look like the best SEC East team right now, and they would easily be undefeated if Mark Richt and the offense were smart enough to give Gurley the football at the end of the South Carolina game. That’s the only difference between 3-1 and 4-0 right now.
