Saturday Blitz Big Ten Power Rankings Week 5

14. Purdue Boilermakers, 2-3 (0-1), Lost to Iowa Hawkeyes 24-10 Last Saturday

Let’s start with the good news. Purdue is already better than it was last year. The Boilermakers are looking better in their games, only losing to good teams by two scores instead of three, four, or five scores. And improvement for the program is being shown.

But this is still by far the worst team in the Big Ten, and that’s saying something in this conference. Purdue still has way too many problems on defense to be that excited about the program. In a system that’s all about minimizing possessions and controlling the clock, giving up nearly 28 points a game looks even worse than you could imagine. And the rest of the season is going to get worse.

Illinois is a road game that is next on the schedule. The comes Michigan State, a road game against Minnesota, a road game against Nebraska, and a home game against Wisconsin. It’s hard to see the Boilermakers winning any of those games, but Illinois is their best chance. In short, this team has no hope for a bowl.
