Saturday Blitz ACC Power Rankings Week 5

9. Duke Blue Devils, 4-1 (0-1), Lost to Miami Hurricanes 22-10 Last Saturday

Unfortunately, in their first real game of the year, the Duke Blue Devils came up extremely small, especially on offense. That’s the problem with playing cupcakes your first four games. You get used to making mistakes you can’t get away with once you play a real team, and Miami exposed that.

Now it’s back to the drawing board for David Cutcliffe and that Duke offense that only had 264 total yards and 3 turnovers against Miami. Anthony Boone looked terrible, and the rush defense also raised questions. To be fair, the defense overall was alright, and Duke Johnson can do to a lot of teams what he did to Duke. But while the Miami defense is good, it should not have limited Boone like that. This could be a cause for concern going forward.

The only thing to be encouraged about is if any coach can correct offensive woes, it’s Cutcliffe. He may not be the best schematic coach in college football, but he knows how to develop players and improve their fundamentals, and that’s what he’ll be able to do if Boone continues to struggle.
