Saturday Blitz Big 12 Power Rankings Week 5
2. Baylor Bears, 4-0 (1-0), Defeated Iowa State Cyclones 49-28 Last Saturday
The Oklahoma State Cowboys and TCU Horned Frogs, and to a degree Kansas State Wildcats, have all earned the right to be mentioned in the conversation among the Top 2 teams, but as of right now those spots are still for Baylor and Oklahoma to lose. The Bears looked good again Saturday with a blowout win over Iowa State, 49-28, and they haven’t done anything negative to fall out of that top spot.
Bryce Petty’s Heisman campaign did not get kicked off in great fashion, with only 1 touchdown and 1 interception, but the Bears have shown they have multiple ways of winning, whether it be through defense, running the ball, or the play of backup quarterback Seth Russell when Petty is hurt. Art Briles has built up a lot of depth with the Bears, who are in the Top 25 in most major statistical categories as a team and in the Top 10 in passing, scoring offense, and scoring defense. So this is a complete team.
A road game against Texas is another test for the Bears this week as they try to move back into that No. 1 spot, but that still isn’t enough given the fact that they have yet to play anybody worthy of even getting votes for the Top 25. It’s going to take great wins against TCU and West Virginia the following weeks to do that.
