Saturday Blitz Big 12 Power Rankings Week 5

8. Texas Tech Red Raiders, 2-2 (0-1), Lost to Oklahoma State Cowboys 45-35 Last Thursday

While we know that Iowa State and Kansas are the two worst teams in the Big 12, Kliff Kingsbury’s team could be in trouble as well. He’s got a pretty solid team in Texas Tech, but things aren’t looking good after their second straight loss to Oklahoma State. Don’t forget that the first one was against Arkansas, the worst team in the SEC West.

It’s understandable for Kingsbury’s air raid offense to put the defense in a whole and give up more than 40 points to teams like Arkansas and Oklahoma State, but the offense has to keep up. Texas Tech should have the personnel to be able to do that, but while they rank 11th in the country in passing with 344 yards per game, they’re only 55th in points per game at 33.8. The defense is still not picking up the slack, giving up 38.8 points per game.

Texas Tech can still make it to 6 or 7 wins this year, or even better, but things have to change quickly. Obviously Kansas and Iowa State are winnable games, but Texas is now a must-win, and they need to upset TCU or West Virginia. At least they get the Longhorns and Mountaineers at home.
