Saturday Blitz Big 12 Power Rankings Week 5

7. Texas Longhorns, 2-2 (1-0), Defeated Kansas Jayhawks 23-0 Last Saturday

Texas and Charlie Strong gained some respect back with a return to .500 Saturday, but a blowout win against Kansas isn’t enough to instill any form of major confidence in this team. The Jayhawks are just flat out bad, and even at this point, the Longhorns still should have been able to blow them out on the road easily.

The questions about the Longhorns still remain. After so many dismissals and key injuries, Strong obviously has his hands full this year if he wants to reach a bowl game. But with an offense ranked out of the Top 100 in passing, rushing, and scoring, holding back a Top 20 defense, one bright spot is that Tyrone Swoopes showed some improvement at quarterback last Saturday, throwing for 218 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions. He still has to get his completion percentage up, though.

With Baylor and Oklahoma as the next two games on the schedule, Longhorn fans are undoubtedly fearful that their team is going to fall easily to 2-4 in the conference. However, there are winnable games on the Big 12 slate to go bowling, with Iowa State, West Virginia, and TCU all at home.
