Saturday Blitz Big 12 Power Rankings Week 5

5. Kansas State Wildcats, 3-1 (1-0), Defeated UTEP Miners 58-28 Last Saturday

The Kansas State Wildcats and Coach Bill Snyder had a great rebound this week with a blowout win against the UTEP Miners after losing a close one at home to Auburn. Sure, it was only UTEP, but the Wildcats still looked very good, and playing Auburn close is still something that is worthy of lots of respect for this Big 12 team.

The Wildcats clearly have a great offense with Jake Waters and Tyler Lockett, and when it’s not making mistakes, it’s as good as any offense in the Big 12. Lockett could become the best playmaker in the Big 12 if he stops dropping passes. However, depth on defense is still an issue. At times against UTEP and Iowa State, they gave up points on what seemed like a bunch of drives in a row. That has to stop going forward the rest of the season if this team wants to remain in the Top 25 and fight its way among the Big 12 elite.

For right now, Kansas State is among those great but not elite Big 12 teams. That could change very quickly with a trip to Oklahoma two weeks after Saturday’s game against Texas Tech. But the Wildcats have to focus on Texas Tech before they can worry about Oklahoma, or they could get caught napping like they almost did against Iowa State.
