Saturday Blitz Week 6 Big Ten Power Rankings

From the beginning of the season, it was obvious that Michigan State was playing Oregon at a bad time. A road game with brand new, inexperienced linebackers, the one key to stopping the Oregon spread offense, was not going to work. Now, though, this team is much better, and it showed with a quality win against Nebraska that is good enough to put them right back where they belong: atop the Big Ten Power Rankings.

The Spartans are looking better by the minute on defense as the linebackers grow up. The rest of the unit is fine, and while there is still inconsistent play on defense, evidenced by the near fourth quarter collapse against Nebraska, it is getting better. Connor Cook is playing like Connor Cook should, and Jeremy Langford has found his groove at running back. A balanced attack that includes only the No. 52 ranked pass offense and the No. 23 ranked rush offense has made for the No. 5 ranked scoring offense, averaging more than 45.6 points per game. That’s efficiency right there, and it’s what is going to bode well for these guys in the future.

Fortunately for us fans, Purdue, Indiana, and Michigan are the next three games, and they should all be wins. That means that the Michigan State-Ohio State game on Nov. 8 should be a battle between two 7-1 teams who are undefeated in the Big Ten. That’s what we were all looking forward to at the beginning of the season, but like Ohio State, the Spartans have got to take care of business.

As the No. 1 team in our Week 6 Big Ten Power Rankings, there’s no reason for them not to.
