Saturday Blitz Week 6 Pac 12 Power Rankings

David Shaw’s group is losing on its own style of play this year. The Stanford Cardinal should be 5-0 right now, but after uncharacteristic mistakes against USC and allowing a lucky fourth down play to Notre Dame, they have fallen to 3-2. Still, we are putting them a head of a few 4-1 teams because they have played a much tougher schedule, and they beat Washington.

The Cardinal still have a great defense that is now no. 1 in the country, only giving up 8.6 points per game. But the offense, if it’s not going to put up tons of points, can’t make continuous mistakes. Kevin Hogan can’t throw 2 interceptions like he did against Notre Dame, and the rushing attack has to get better to keep these guys on the field. Without those two things, this group can be rendered useless. Efficiency doesn’t simply mean not putting up lots of points.

The college football playoff picture might be over for Stanford, but another Pac 12 title is still in the mix. The Cardinal control their own destiny to achieve that, but they have got to play smarter the rest of the year because Oregon, Utah, and UCLA are all still on the schedule, and they’ll be gunning hard for Stanford.

For right now, this is a good team that we won’t doc too much. But it has to get better.
