Saturday Blitz Vegas Pac 12 Predictions Week 7

Washington State Cougars at No. 25 Stanford Cardinal

Line: Stanford by 17

On paper, this should be a blowout. When you compare styles of play, this game becomes incredibly unpredictable. Mike Leach’s Washington State Cougars have been incredible underachievers this year so far, but what’s happened is everything you would fear about his air raid has come to fruition. The offense put up 59 points last week, and gave up 60. But true to the air raid unpredictability, the Cougars had just upset Utah 28-27 the week before. So what’s the formula for beating Stanford. Come out gunning. Leach simple needs to let Connor Halliday continue to try to throw for 1,000 yards in a game. Stanford wants to slow down the game, as it always does, but if Washington State turns this into a shootout, the Cardinal have proven this year they can be prone to making mistakes. So watch out for how this game unfolds.

  • Stanford and David Shaw, meanwhile, have to be sick to their stomachs that they aren’t undefeated right now. A fluke fourth down play and a mistake-prone game in early September have cost them two 3-point games, but they should be much better. This team needs to force Washington State to play its game. Kevin Hogan is still a great quarterback, and he needs to use his efficiency to keep that Stanford defense off the field. Stanford is good enough to mount long drives, the way it always does, and the defense should be able to make Halliday’s numbers look mortal. But for the Cardinal, taking care of the football is a big deal as well. If they don’t do that, it could get Leach’s offense going. However, without turnovers, they should be able to move the ball at will on this defense.

    Prediction

In these types of match-ups, Stanford’s style always wins over a Washington State style. It’ll happen again. The Cardinal will get the win at home. Unlike the Vegas odds, it won’t be a blowout, but it’ll be enough for a comfortable. This team will limit possessions as much as possible, and Leach and the Cougars won’t be able to handle it.
