After guiding the Louisville Cardinals to a 3-1 start, quarterback Will Gardner went down with a knee injury. Reggie Bonnafon filled in, going 2-0 and got the start last week against the Clemson Tigers despite Will Gardner being dressed.
Reggie Bonnafon struggled and was lifted for Will Gardner, who played well completing 10-of-16 passes for 150 yards and a touchdown. He nearly rallied the Cardinals for a late touchdown but Louisville was stopped on fourth-and-goal on the two-yard line in the final 21 seconds.
On Tuesday, offensive coordinator Garrick McGee announced that Will Gardner would start Saturday against the North Carolina State Wolfpack.
“Reggie came in and did a really good job and won us a couple games,” McGee said via Jeff Greer of The Courier-Journal. “Will is back healthy now, so we’re going to put in Will first.”
However, Reggie Bonnafon will still get a chance to play.
“Reggie has done enough to show us that he deserves an opportunity to play,” McGee said. “When we go to a certain package, he’ll be in the game to allow him to use his skills. What it is, he’s shown us that he is capable of helping us win.”
The Cardinals and Wolfpack will kick-off from Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium at 3:30 PM EST on Saturday afternoon.
