Chad Voytik rushed 118 yards and threw for 92 yards and a touchdown while James Conner rushed for 85 yards and two touchdowns as the Pittsburgh Panthers defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies 21-16 at Heinz Field on Thursday night.

The victory ended a four-game losing streak for the Panthers and moved them to 2-1 in ACC play. Every team in the Coastal has at least one loss, meaning the Panthers are squarely in the mix to earn an ACC Title game berth. It was the second conference loss for the Hokies.

Pittsburgh got the scoring started early when All-ACC wide receiver Tyler Boyd caught a 53-yard touchdown pass from Voytik. Virginia Tech answered with a field goal after a 38-yard punt return by Greg Stroman. On Virginia Tech’s next possession, they fumbled, setting Pittsburgh up at the Virginia Tech 22. Three plays later, Conner scored on a 15-yard run.

The Hokies were able to get a field goal prior to the half to make it 14-6. They cut it 14-9 early in the second half and it looked like we had a game.

Instead, Conner scored from 13 yards out following a 49-yard run by Voytik to make it 21-9.

Michael Brewer hit Cam Phillips for a 14-yard touchdown with 4:52 to go but the Hokies’ final pass fell incomplete on fourth down with 1:22 to go, giving Pittsburgh the win.

Pittsburgh will host the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets a week from Saturday while Virginia Tech will host the Miami Hurricanes next Thursday.
