Big 12 Power Rankings Week 8: Who’s No. 1 Now?
Saturday Blitz Big 12 Power Rankings Week 8
Okay everybody in Morgantown, please don’t get too angry at this ranking. West Virginia proved it is a great team by beating the best team in the conference, and I’m not saying they won’t move up this list a lot more in the future. But they’ve got to win away from home in the conference. They did it in non-conference play against Maryland, but anything can happen with that Morgantown fan base. If they do that, we’ll move this team up.
Clint Trickett has at least proven he might be the best quarterback in the Big 12 with the way he is playing, and no that it not an exaggeration. The offensive line for the Mountaineers is great too. But the defense is still a bit suspect. It looked amazing against Baylor, but we are calling that an aberration at this moment. If they do that again, say, this weekend against Oklahoma State, we’ll change our tone.
And that road game against Oklahoma State is how we’ll judge this team at this point. The Cowboys have been a dominant team at home, particularly on offense, and they’ll want to make amends for that TCU loss. That game and then TCU at home next Saturday will give us a great read on them. With Texas and Iowa State still on the schedule, this team is good enough to reach 7 wins. Could it reach 8, 9, or even 10? Could it win the Big 12. Well, they do control their own fate.
And this is clearly a good team. It’s time to see how Dana Holgorsen’s group handles success.
