NFL Draft Profile: South Alabama QB Brandon Bridge

Marcus Mariota, Brett Hundley, Jameis Winston, and Connor Cook. These are just a handful of QB’s that have gotten major hype thus far in the College Football season. Have you ever heard of Brandon Bridge? Didn’t think so. He’s the signal caller for South Alabama and deserves just as much hype as the previously mentioned players.

After almost committing to University of Buffalo, the Canadian native settled at DI -AA Alcorn State. Although he had a great Freshman campaign,  Bridge was dissatisfied with Alcorn State and decided to transfer to the Jaguars of South Alabama. After sitting out one season and getting limited reps behind starter Ross Metheny, Bridge has finally had his time to shine this season and has taken advantage of the opportunity.

While Bridge’s stats may not be that impressive, his measureables and skill set make him a very intriguing prospect. Not to mention that his playing style is almost identical to Colin Kaepernick’s. I took a look at Bridge’s 339 yd 3 TD performance against Appalachin State.

Vs. Appalachin State

  • Bridge possesses a tall and lanky frame (Colin Kaepernick mold)
  • Same unorthodox throwing motion as Kaepernick and puts a ton of velocity/zip on the ball
  • Definitely a pass first QB but does have the ability to run at will.
  • Although he can break off a run, Bridge generally tends to look to the sidelines when using his feet
    • This shows his high football IQ and reduces the chance of injury significantly
  • Displays confidence in the pocket and shows good pocket presence
  • Just like Kaepernick, he is able to throw accurately on the run while evading pressure
  • Impressive job scanning the field and working through progressions rather than using his first option
  • Volatile ball placement
    • Bridge can drop dimes but can also have difficulty getting the ball in the right place for the receiver

What To Expect In May

At this point, Bridge looks like an early Day Three pick but that could easily change. He has to take advantage of the combine and the Senior Bowl (if invited) to raise his draft stock. I won’t be surprised if he can vault himself into the second day of the draft. Brandon Bridge won’t be a starter in his first year in the NFL, but teams who are looking for a viable back up who could take over the helm in a couple of years, just like Colin Kaepernick, should take an interest in Bridge. Check him out tonight as South Alabama takes on Troy on ESPNU at 7:30.
