Boston College Beats Virginia Tech 33-31

Player of the Game:

Tyler Murphy, Quarterback- 8 of 15 for 110 Yards & 2 Touchdowns; 18 Carries fo 122 Yards & 1 Touchdown

It’s official. Virginia Tech’s football team is in free fall since their upset win over Ohio State back in September.

The Boston College Eagles ran it down the Hokies’ throats Saturday, the way a Steve Addazio-coached team would, en route to a 33-31 victory. With 110 yards passing and 122 yards rushing from Eagles quarterback Tyler Murphy, Virginia Tech had no answer for him.

Just like against Georgia Tech earlier this year, they let a running quarterback throw on them. Murphy threw for 2 touchdowns.

Virginia Tech scored first to go up 7-0, but Boston College came back and had the score at 23-10 going into the fourth quarter. Then the Hokies scored 2 touchdowns to go up 24-23, but Boston College got a field goal and a 57-yard touchdown run from Murphy to go up 33-24. That was enough.

The Eagles held on for the 33-31 victory.

  • Let’s call it how we see it. This one can’t be blamed on Michael Brewer. We have said all year the key to Virginia Tech turning their season around is for Brewer to limit his mistakes. With 345 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions Saturday, that’s exactly what he did. Don’t blame that loss on him.

Blame it on the defense, which still can’t stop rush-heavy ACC teams. Frank Beamer’s team is in trouble and needs to fix lots of things.

Boston College, meanwhile, is sticking to its identity and now has clinched eligibility for the postseason for the second straight year despite losing a ton of talent. Addazio has this program on the right track, so watch out for what it could do in the future.

Heck, forget about the future. They could still do a lot this year. A road win against Virginia Tech is a huge lift.
