Why Baylor Deserves to be the Lowest Ranked One-Loss Power Five Team

In all honesty, the Big 12 teams should be stuck at No. 5 and No. 6. But we may be okay with TCU being in the Top 4. At the same time, though, despite our staunch support for head-to-head being the difference between two one-loss teams, an exception has to be made for this case.

Since we’re saying this, in the interest of full disclosure, we did have Baylor ahead of TCU in our Top 25 this week due to head-to-head. But too many compelling cases have been made against them to this point. Now, they have to do more to sell us on jumping into the playoff.

Baylor’s schedule at this point is just too pathetic. They have played three teams with a winning record all year, TCU being one of them, and they are only 2-1. The Bears have no quality non-conference victories, and outside of TCU and Oklahoma they have no quality in-conference victories. Texas can count for something, as can the blowout win against Oklahoma.

But the amount of cupcakes they were able to indulge upon this year should definitely be held against them, and it is a good thing that the Selection Committee is doing that. Maybe in the future, teams won’t run from non-conference opponents because of that.

To be fair, we can’t quit on Baylor just yet. The Bears still have a great match-up against Kansas State this weekend, and that’ll be a third quality win against a ranked opponent. If that happens, we can sell them moving up. But for right now, they belong at No. 6.
