A New Era (2014 SoCon Football Recap)

SoCon Football 2014 Recap Part I

The 2014 season was the beginning of a new era for Southern Conference football, as Mercer and VMI began playing in the league, with the exit of Appalachian State, Georgia Southern and Elon.

The 2014 season in the Southern Conference will be remembered for some exciting football games, the rise of Western Carolina, and establishing a new identity for the league, which had long been known as the home of perennial FCS powers Georgia Southern and Appalachian State.

Over the years, the SoCon has produced eight national title winners, however, just one of those national title winners remains, as Furman’s 1988 title remains all that is left of those eight crowns won by Marshall (2), Appalachian State (3) and Georgia Southern (6/3 as SoCon member).
