The Play Part II: Bahamas Bowl Between WKU and CMU has Best Ending Since Stanford-Cal

facebooktwitterreddit

There’s no debating it. The ending to the Bahamas Bowl between the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers and the Central Michigan Chippewas was the best of the year.

Western Kentucky prevailed 49-48 in a shootout after Central Michigan failed on a 2-point conversion with no time on the clock to come up just short of finishing off one of the biggest comebacks in history. But the real story is the touchdown that gave CMU a chance.

Down 49-42 and at their own 25 yard line with one second left, CMU quarterback Cooper Rush completed a 45-yard pass to Jesse Kroll, who then lateraled it to Deon Butler, who then lateraled it to Courtney Williams, who finally lateraled it to Titus Davis, who ran it in for a touchdown.

Davis dove and barely got in.

You can see the play here.

Unfortunately, the 2-point conversion to get the win was a failure, and the Hilltoppers came out on top. But that only made it more exciting.

  • This was by far the best bowl game of the year. CMU was down 49-14 going into the fourth quarter. And then Cooper Rush decided to throw 5 touchdown passes. The fourth one was with just over a minute to go, and after Central Michigan failed to get the onside kick, they still got the ball back with very little time.

Once the touchdown happened, it seemed as if the Chippewas were destined to win the game.

Brandon Doughty was, well, Brandon Doughty, going 31 of 42 for 486 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions. But sitting on a lead almost cost the Hilltoppers in the fourth quarter.

At least they got out of there with a win. That’s the second game in a row WKU almost blew, though.

Remember, the Hilltoppers were ahead against Marshall for much of the game and blew that lead. That game also game down to a 2-point conversion, which WKU converted to get the win.

This time, however, they stopped a 2-point converstion to get the win.

The Hilltoppers moved to 8-5, while CMU fell to 7-6.
