Oregon Ducks Abandon Yellow and Green School Colors for National Championship Game

Would you say that the National Championship Game is a very important step in your football program? What if you’re an Oregon Ducks football program known for throwing out great uniform combinations in just about every game but choose to go with silver and gray and white even though your school colors are yellow and green for one of the most important moments in your school’s history? Are we laying too much emphasis on this? What if Alabama chose to go with all black uni’s and a white helmet against Ohio State? Wouldn’t happen I know but this is all wrong what Oregon is doing.

Somewhere, the originators of Oregon’s school colors are spinning in their grave. What has Phil Knight (co-founder of Nike) and his team done to the Green and Yellow? The trademark ‘O’ doesn’t even seem to be prevalent in any of the uniforms. Then it dawns on the consumerism aspect. In the biggest game since 2011, the Ducks are choosing neutral colors for mass appeal to sell more jerseys in a broad spectrum. It’s always the money isn’t it? Still, it would’ve been nice to see some yellow and green in there, somewhere…anywhere.

Guess all that matters is the play on the field. Oregon opened up as 7 point favorites in the National Championship game against the Ohio State Buckeyes, who will be donning their traditional red, silver, and white trim. Imagine if Ohio State came out in no red or silver but matched Oregon’s white and silver with black and white. Yuck! It would look like a prison football match out there but a monochromatic dream.

Here’s to playing in traditional school colors. Here’s to you green and yellow, who’ll be noticeably absent on the field but not in the stands…We hope.
