13. North Carolina Tar Heels
The offense for North Carolina ranked 38th nationally in points per game at 33.2 and 28th nationally in passing yards per game with 278 yards, making it one of the best units in the ACC. Dual threat quarterback Marquise Williams will return for his senior season making the offense a good bet to take off again.
However the defense was the Achilles heel (no pun intended) for them giving up 39 points per game. They hired Gene Chizik to run the defense, but count me among the ones who don’t believe it will make a difference. The cupboard is pretty bare for him as well, with no Heels being listed as all conference performers or even honorable mentions. Yikes.
This may seem like a steep fall for the Tar Heels. After all they did go to a bowl game and finish with six wins last year, compared to Syracuse who only had three wins. However the one thing that can be said about Syracuse and Wake Forest is they both gave max effort at all times and always looked engaged, something that cannot be said about the Tar Heels. The locker room didn’t seem like a connected unit and team and that falls on the coach.
At this time last year, the Tar Heels were considered to be among the ACC’s elite with their talent coming in, but in 2015 expect a drop-off and a season that ends with no bowl game for the Heels.
