This is the Bill Parcells protege we were talking about. Tom Coughlin’s tradition of winning just enough to avoid being fired goes right back to his college football days from 1991 to 1993 with the Boston College Eagles.
In three years in the early 1990s, Coughlin turned the Eagles into consistent winners, going from 4-7 to 8-3-1 to 9-3, but he never did anything to wow anybody. Again, perhaps he could have with time. But luckily for him, the semi-confidence that we all have in him is able to hold water there the same way it is now with the New York Giants lucking into two Super Bowl victories.
He at least deserves credit for building up Jacksonville after it became an expansion franchise. The guy clearly knows football and is the first person on this list to actually have some college success.
