Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners: Recent 5-Star Signing Day Busts
By Jerry Levi
Jermie Calhoun
Ranked No. 7 overall in ESPN’s 150, running back Jermie Calhoun was supposed to be the 2nd coming of Adrian Peterson in 2008.
Having interest from Alabama, Nebraska, and Texas, Calhoun was set to take his place in Sooner lore alongside running back greats like Billy Sims and the aforementioned Peterson. So what happened?
Redshirting in 2008, Calhoun only had 242 yards on 56 carries in 2009, making DeMarco Murray the featured back for that season. Early in 2010, which was supposed to be his breakout season, Calhoun tore his ACL and Dominique Whaley stepped in, breaking out against Texas in the Red River Rivalry and sending the young 5 star to transfer to Angelo State in 2011 where, at 26 years old, he’s finally a senior.
To be fair, Calhoun possibly could have been much better were it not for an ACL injury, and this is the classic case of football being extremely unpredictable. However, based on the hype surrounding him, he clearly was a major bust.
And of course, Oklahoma has made a habit of being a major disappointment overall since the 2009 football season and teasing fans every time there is even minimal hype behind the program.
