In today’s NFL, everyone needs stud corners and safeties. The days are gone where teams can rely on big run stuffing nose tackles and slow footed linebackers to carry a defense. The pressure has now been placed on defensive line to get a pass rush, and more importantly the secondary to hold up and defend the pass. The rules in today’s football games heavily favor the offense and specifically the quarterback and the wide receivers.
The same can be said about college football. However college football does have a high percentage of teams that run option or heavy run formations, (Georgia Tech and Boston College come to mind), but when a college football team has a shutdown corner or safety duo, it can make the offense one dimensional and you can stack the box. Every team wants the threat of being able to pass and would love it if the box would stay light allowing them to run or pass, but shutdown corners and play making safeties make that difficult.
The NFL is not the same as college, but college teams do try to follow suit and build a reputation for churning out good players and defensive backs are all the rage right now.
Take the super bowl for example, the best three safeties in the NFL played in that game, along with the two best corners.
With that being said here are the top five defensive back recruits in ACC.
