9. Michigan Wolverines, 1901-1904
Of the elite traditional powerhouses of college football today that brag about their great history, only the Michigan Wolverines get to trace theirs this far back.
Although it is still true that dynasties can’t be taken seriously before the AP Poll era, this is the other exception. And like the Princeton-Yale dominance, this expanded football relevance outside of the Northeast.
Michigan’s early dominance during this time includes national championships all four of these years with a 43-0-1 total record.
This all came as Fielding Yost took over the program in 1901, as the Michigan athletic department was one of the few departments outside of the northeast that took this gentleman’s game of football seriously at the time.
And from this dynasty, college football began to grow into a national phenomenon. This dynasty overthrew the elites on the northeast and made football what it is today.
That has to count for, well, everything.
But it remains low on the list because it was before the AP Poll era.
