5. 1994: Colorado Buffaloes Beat Michigan Wolverines 27-26
The magic of slash was put on full display in this game. The Colorado Buffaloes had fallen behind on the road 26-14 to the Michigan Wolverines going into the fourth quarter and appeared to be doomed with 2:16 left.
The Hail Mary by Stewart is what we remember to give the Buffaloes a 27-26 win. But honestly, so much happened before that. With the ball, Colorado was given a gift when Michigan had too many men on the field the previous drive, setting up a short touchdown to make it 26-21. Then, after failing to recover the onside kick, Colorado was backed into a 3rd and 2 situation.
If Michigan converts, they run out the clock. But a false start pushed them back five yards. They were stopped on third down, and Colorado got the ball back. That is when the 64-yard Hail Mary came from Stewart. The ball was tipped and caught, and Colorado pulled off one of the most improbable comebacks of all time. Here is the play.
This game did not involve any upsets, as both teams were in the Top 10. But all of the improbabilities in the comeback on top of the Hail Mary make this a game where there had to be some kind of higher power overseeing the situation.
